Sri Lanka V Bankstown
A Celebration of Cricket
Sri Lanka V Bankstown DCC on Sunday 27th January
Cricket was the winner. The weather was perfect, the crowd was enthusiastic and the teams were generous with their time and gracious to the extreme. Which team won the game? No one remembers.
The Sri Lanka Cricket team were the very honoured guests of the Bankstown DCC at the Bankstown Oval on Sunday 27th January in a practice match played in perfect conditions. The local team was Captained by Danny Waugh, brother of the famous Waugh Twins, who led a very competitive XI on to the field when Sri Lanka elected to bat first. Danny was supported by NSW Blues squad member Aaron Bird and former NSW representatives Scott Thompson, Corey Richards, David Freedman and Brett Van Deinsen.
The day was a celebration of all things cricket and the crowd numbered about 3,500 with an overwhelming majority of Sri Lankans.
In the lunch break well known Sri Lankan singer Alston Koch launched his Murali tribute song before the crowd including the great bowler himself. The song celebrates Murali’s becoming the most successful Test cricket bowler ever with a record of 709 wickets. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the CD & DVD are to be donated to the Foundation of Goodness in Sri Lanka.
There was a Baila dance competition in which dozens of young and not so young Sri Lankans danced to their delight as MC Len Pascoe encouraged them to creative heights and Alston had the participants dancing behind him in a conga dance of celebration.
Around the ground the crowd feasted on food provided by the Blue Elephant, Lakewood Sri Lanka Finger Food and the Bankstown Cricket Club. There were beer tents, soft drink, coffee and ice cream stands to keep the spectators cool on a very hot and exciting day.
Special guests in the crowd included HE Mr K Balapitabendi, Sri Lankan High Commissioner and Mrs Gothami Indikadahena, Acting Consul General for Sri Lanka along with prominent members of the Sydney Sri Lankan community and the Mayor of Bankstown Tania Mihailuk, Daryl Melham, local Federal MP, and well other known Bankstown community members.
At the close of play Harry Solomons of Kingsgrove Sports made a presentation of special memorabilia items to Sri Lanka Captain Mahela Jayawardene and Kumara Sangakkara – Numbers One and Two of “The Partnership” which celebrates their World Test batting record partnership of 624 runs.
Number three of “The Partnership” series was auctioned on the spot along with a Murali piece marking his Test Wicket record which included a signed ball in a box frame with photos. The proceeds of the auction and from the day will be distributed to the Foundation of Goodness and to the Hope Cancer Hospital in Sri Lanka.
Thanks to Marty Klumpp & Brian Freedman and all the volunteer workers from the Bankstown DCC and Harry Solomons of Kingsgrove Sports for their hard work to ensure such a great day.
