Sadly Stuart lost his 12 month battle with cancer in August 2005. His good cricket mate Robert Hobbs wrote the following - Now, this is really tough... I'm sorry to say mate that Unfortunately young Stu who as you know has been battling with Cancer for 12 months passed away on Saturday night. He had been doing really well recently and was in line a few weeks ago to have an opperation to remove all the cancerous cells from his lungs but just a few days before the scheduled op he had a scan which showed that his cancers had grown dramatically in a short period of time and unfortunately Stu had had all the Chemo that he was able to have (Chemo can kill you if you have to much of it) so there was no more the doctors could do for him. His last few weeks were spent in bed in his own room at home with his family, he wasn't aware that the end was near as his mum didn't want him to lose hope that he might pull through so she didn't tell him, instead he was just made comfortable and dosed up with pain killers until he drifted off in his sleep at 1.30am on Sunday morning. It's nice that he went without any suffering and particularly apt that earlier in the day we had won our penultimate game of the season and in doing so secured the league title. Stu woke up briefly at about 9pm just for long enough for his mum to tell him that we were champions and apparently he smiled and said that's good, well done boys, and then went off to sleep again, that was the last thing anyone said to him. Obviously it's a shock to us all as we weren't aware that his health had deteriorated so quickly but knowing Stu he would want us to not cause a fuss and to get on with things, so that is what we are trying to do now, his funeral is on Friday at 11am and we have all agreed that after that we are all to be nothing but cheerful and upbeat, like Stu would be if he was still with us. Sorry to be the barer of bad news mate but i thought you would want to know, Stu was always so impressed with the cricket stuff i get from you and we often used to talk about Kingsgrove, it's just a shame he never got to use the kit he got from you, he was so looking forward to striding out to bat with his puma octane gear. We have one game to go now and although the title is in the bag we will obviously be going all out to win on Saturday for Stu, he was such a special lad and one who will never be forgotten at Ryde, we have a few ideas for things to do in his memory and fingers crossed we will do him proud on Saturday.

Speak to you soon Hamish
Best Wishes,
Rob
