Brad Gibson in Canada

1. Name - Bradley Gibson
2. Date of Birth - 11 June 1971
3. Place of Birth - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
4. Current Location - Saint Albert, Alberta, Canada
5. Who do you play cricket for - Strathcona Cricket Club
6. In what capacity (bowler, opening bat, coach, supporter etc) - Wicket keeper
7. Best Cricket feats (Highest Score, not getting a duck in the final etc) - 19 not out with two catches behind and a stumping in my first game as wicket keeper
8. Greatest Cricket moment / memory - Same as above (my career is in its fledgling stages)
9. Tell us little about your cricket history - (ie when and how you started, where you've played, where you see yourself going etc) - I began playing cricket three years ago after having seen it on a holiday to visit my wife's family in the UK. Having grown up in Canada and being a fifth generation Canadian, cricket was absolutely nowhere in my background growing up. Upon my return from England, I swore that I would get into the game here, sought out a team, and the rest is history.
10. Favorite Teams - County: Surrey and National: England
11. Favorite Players - Alec Stewart, Jonty Rhodes
12. Favorite Commentator - Henry Blofield
13. Favorite Cricketing Publication - The Wisden Cricketer
14. Favorite Cricketing Website -Test Match Special (BBC) because living in Canada it is one of the only ways to listen to cricket
15. Favorite Cricketing Brand - Gray Nicolls
16. Tell us about the best bat you've ever had - The only bat I have ever had is a Gray Nicolls Longbow. If I could just figure out how to use it....
17. Tell us a little about the cricket competition/s you play in - I play in the Edmonton and District Cricket League, which consists of 11 teams in two divisions. Unfortunately, we are in the B side at the moment, but do hope to change that in the upcoming season.
18. What ideas would you propose to improve the game of cricket - The one thing that I can't seem to get my head around, having played baseball growing up is the fact that runs due to a fielding error (other than a bye which reflects on the keeper) are charged to the bowler. It seems nonsensical to me to charge a second run because of a throwing error on the bowler who had no control whatsoever in the matter. To combat this, a new category of "extra" could be added. In this way, the first run could be charged to the bowler, but not a subsequent one if it was not his fault.
19. What are your thoughts on the sledging issue - I feel that sledging in any sport is inappropriate. One of the things that drew me to the game of cricket was standard of conduct and fair play that most players exhibit on a regular basis. Too many sports such as basketball and NFL football actually include sledging and verbal intimidation as parts of the game. I think they are unnecessary and counterproductive. Growing up in Canada, I have played and continue to play ice hockey at a competitive level. Verbal abuse (and physical as well) has always been a part of that game. It need not be, however. This is something that must continue to be dealt with very harshly by the ICC and local clubs as "it isn't cricket".
20. Who do you rate as being the best in the last 20 years -
Batsman -Because I have been following cricket for only about five years, I don't feel I have enough background to accurately complete this category. As far as current players go, I like the bowling of James Anderson, the keeping of Adam Gilchrist, the all-round abilities of Andrew Flintoff and the captaining of players such as Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting.
21. Have you ever had professional cricket coaching - No
22. What is the best tip you've had or given - "Hit only what you think you can; block everything else!"
23. What is your most treasured cricketing item - my Longbow bat
24. Is there are song you love that you relate to cricket - "I don't like Cricket"
25. Best Cricket Video you've seen - Unfortunately, none!
26. Best Cricket Book you've read - "Cricket: The Great Ones" by John Arlott
27. Best Cricket After dinner speaker you've seen - Unfortunately again, I have yet to.
28. Best / Nicest cricketer you've met - can elaborate - All members of Strathcona Cricket Club for giving me a chance to play and improve my skills
29. What other interests do you have outside of cricket - As mentioned above, I continue to play ice hockey in the winters, cricket in the summers, as well as hunting, flyfishing and other outdoor pursuits
30. How did you come across Kingsgrove Sports Centre -Your Final say - You may write about anything here, maybe something you've written in the past, a cricket joke, your comments on the greatest game on earth. I was referred by a friend who ordered a bowling machine.
31. Your Final say (Optional) - You may write about anything here, maybe something you've written in the past, a cricket joke, your comments on the greatest game on earth. I agree fully that cricket is the greatest game on Earth. As an elementary school teacher, I am trying to spread the good word of cricket throughout the Edmonton area, by fostering a love for the game in my students. Being new to the game, they have taken to it very well and hopefully, they will become further involved in the game as they go on in years. In the next few years, cricketers everywhere must work hard to continue to exhibit the high standards of behaviour that have made cricket the fantastic game that it is. My only regret with cricket is that I was introduced to the game at such a late age. However, I am definitely going to work hard to make the most of however much cricketing I have left. Hamish and the staff at Kingsgrove are absolute fantastic to deal with and I recommend them wholeheartedly to anyone interested in getting top quality merchandise at very reasonable prices.
