Paul Brett of St George's Basin, Australia

1. Name – Paul Brett 29/11/2008
2. Date of Birth – 12/10/1954 age 54 years
3. Place of Birth – Sydney
4. Current Location – St Georges Basin on the south coast of NSW 3 hours south of Sydney ½ hour south of Nowra.
5. Who do you play cricket for - played in the Canterbury District Cricket Association for Earlwood (now know as earlwood wanderers) from the age of 8 to ~38 years of age. Started again 4 years ago with central districts cc now known as bay and basin cc.
6. In what capacity – played from juniors to first grade….president of the Earlwood cc for 4 years….captained 3rd grade for the past 2 years….now move up and down between 2nds and thirds.
7. Best Cricket feats – 1972/3 8 wickets for 11 runs in 2nd grade and 104 runs not out against Canterbury 1987/8
8. Greatest Cricket moment / memory – grand final win in 2nd grade 1987/88 with bating through the innings and surviving in a last wicket stand over the last 2 hours of play. This biggest of course is playing cricket with my son!
9. Tell us little about your cricket history – most of my time was spent with the new ball and/or opening the batting for Earlwood. After a break of about 12 years and an opportunity to play cricket with my son I took up the game again. I am sure grateful for that opportunity to play with my son but also now realize what I’ve been missing. Love the game, and am still quite able to perform, I will be continuing for some time yet.
10. Tell us a little about the cricket competitions you play in – The club (bay and basin cc) plays in the Shoalhaven District Cricket Association competition. First and second grade play on turf wickets, with our home ground situated at Sanctuary Point Oval and has proven to be one of the best in the Shoalhaven association.
For third and fourth grade, synthetic wickets are situated at Francis Ryan Reserve (Sanctuary Point), Vincentia Sporting Complex (behind the Bay and Basin Leisure Centre) and Huskisson Oval (adjacent to the Huskisson Bowling Club).
The club fields junior sides from Milo the vey young (have a go cricket) to u16s.
Bay and Basin covers a considerable area and is made up of many smaller communities surrounding the Jervis Bay and St. Georges Basin. These communities include, but are not limited to: Basin View, Erowal Bay, Falls Creek, HMAS Creswell, Huskisson, Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay Village, Old Erowal Bay, Sanctuary Point, St. Georges Basin, Tomerong, Vincentia, Wandandian, Woollamia, Worrowing Heights, Wreck Bay and Wright's Beach.
11. Favorite Teams – NSW blues and of course the Australian cricket teams fall in high regard as my favorites.
12. Favorite Players – Gilchrist / Haddin / Lee
13. Favorite Commentator - R Benaud
14. Favorite Cricketing Publication - Baggy Green
15. Favorite Cricketing Website – http://bayandbasincc.com.au
16. Favorite Cricketing Brand – I have a slight leaning to the puma brand but find the quality of most cricket equipment I come across pretty darn good.
17. Tell us about the best bat you've ever had – maybe not the best but a gunn and moore signed by alan kippax….still have it.
18. What is your most treasured cricketing item – The ball that I used taking my 8 wickets for 11 runs.
19. What ideas would you propose to improve the game of cricket – Allow some of the second level international players to play for some of the weaker countries to help raise their standards to compete at the same level. This will allow the good players in those countries to show themselves as top players and for the others to learn from the foreign players to improve their status. Also maybe more countries will eventually compete at the highest level.
20. Rate the following three -
Test - This is real cricket and is the way the game should be played at the top. It is a true test of the player and team
One Dayers – Find it entertaining to see on TV but would be hard pressed to see it live.
Twenty20 – “have a slog” don’t really get it. I think it was invented by someone (a batsman) who hates bowlers. Just waiting for rulings like one hand off the roof and you’re out. The money means it’s here to stay and even the shoalhaven will have a 20/20 comp included this year.
21. What are your thoughts on the sledging issue – I believe sledging today has a different meaning (far too personal). You must respect your opposition as a competitor in the game and a fellow lover of the sport.
22. Who do you rate as being the best in the last 20 years -
Batsman – Ricky Ponting
Bowler – Wes Hall, Shane Warne, Glen McGrath
WK – Adam Gilchrist
Allrounder – Steve Waugh
Captain – Bob Simpson
23. Who do you rate as being the greatest cricketer of all time – Don Bradman
24. Was there any player you simply did not like – When in my late teens a NZ batsman, on a long stay in Australia, hit me for my first ever six off my bowling and was near perfect with his batting. Got him eventually with a sharp short delivery with his right leg taking down the stumps. Maybe some consolation but I think he didn’t mind with his total @ 154. His name was Jeremy Coney who later in life captained NZ. I think I was just plain out classed.24. Have you ever had professional cricket coaching - no, I learnt from playing with friends in the park or in the game itself
25. What is the best tip you've had or given – To give yourself more time to select and play your shot you need to be in position early. This means you need to concentrate on the ball all the way from the bowlers hand to the bat and be prepared to use your feet to achieve your best result.
26. Best / Nicest cricketer you've met - OLD Bob who still pays for Ulladulla (4th grade) in his late 60’s. He is schooling young cricketers in how to play the game with the correct attitude and respect.
27. What other interests do you have outside of cricket – Relaxing with the family
28. How did you come across Kingsgrove Sports Centre - played as a junior locally and got to know it by word of mouth.
28. Your Final say - Thank you for this oportunity
