Lloyd Scott of Essex, England

Kingsgrove Sports Centre Customer of the Week

1. Name and current date – Lloyd Scott, 16th August 2005

2. Date of Birth – 13.10.61

3. Place of Birth – Stepney, London

4. Current Location – Rainham, Essex

5. Who do / did you play cricket for – I play for Hutton in the Essex League. As a schoolboy I played for Essex Schoolboys and Colts before being offered an opportunity in professional football with Leyton Orient.

6. In what capacity – As a young man an all rounder, as an old(er) man an opening batsman.

7. Best Cricket feats – I've managed to score a century in my last three seasons and hopefully captaining my team to promotion this season.

8. Greatest Cricket moment / memory – Playing with and against some of the greatest players in the world. I recently played for the Lord's Taveners against a Lashings World XI which included, Gordon Greenidge, Herschelle Gibbs, VVS Laxman, Saqlain Mustag, Joel Garner etc. I was the only player in the game that wasn't an international. (I scored 19!)

9. Tell us little about your cricket history – It started when my Dad bought me a cricket bat, gloves and pads for a Christmas present, even though I hadn't asked for any equipment. At the time in England kids played football in the winter and cricket in the summer without any of the other distractions they have today. Having my own gear gave me a head start over the other guys. When I had the opportunity to play professional football I pretty much stopped playing cricket, then 5 years ago I was invited to play in a charity game and I thought 'I really have to start playing again before I get too old!' As well as my club Hutton, who play in the Essex League I have played for the Lord's Taveners, the Cross Arrows (who play at the Nursery end at Lord's), London County Cricket Club (which was founded by WG Grace). I would love to play in Australia and also for a wanderers team called I Zingari.

10. Tell us a little about the cricket competitions you play in – Mainly league cricket. I have played in 20/20 games and 6 a side indoor league, but I haven't got the range of shots and am too slow to be comfortable in those forms of the game. (I am officially the world's slowest man, with a marathon time of over 6 days. I was wearing a deep-sea diver's suit at the time!)

11. Favorite Teams – Essex, England and Australia

12. Favorite Players – Matthew Hayden and all the other left handed opening batsmen!

13. Favorite Commentator – Nasser Hussain- gives an insight view, as he played with most of the current players.

14. Favorite Cricketing Publication - Kingsgrove Catalogue!

15. Favorite Cricketing Website – Cricinfo

16. Favorite Cricketing Brand – Gray Nicolls

17. Tell us about the best bat you've ever had – My dad took me to the Gray-Nicolls factory in Robertsbridge, Sussex when I was a schollboy. We were told it wasn't open to the public, but then my Dad recognised the manager Jock Livingstone, who used to play for Australia. They started talking and we were then given a private tour of the factory and I was able to have specially made for me one of the new 'Scoop' bats. It was fantastic and I still have it in my loft at home.

18. What is your most treasured cricketing item – Really all of my cricket kit. I'm a bit of a cricket gear fanatic, as the guys at Kingsgrove will tell you. When I had finished my Penny Farthing bike ride across Australia from Perth to Sydney I made pretty much straight for Kingsgrove. I must have made a least half a dozen visits before I flew home to England.

19. What ideas would you propose to improve the game of cricket – Improve over rates. It can be done! The administrators really should take the players into account when setting out tour itineraries.

20. Rate the following three -
Test
- The best. Like a good book whose story gradually unfolds and gets more exciting as you reach the finish, you can't beat it.
One Dayers – Like a magazine that you can pick up and dip into and out of when you want.
Twenty20 – Pulp Fiction! A comic! I must be in the minority, especially in England by saying I am not really taken by it, although I realise it is a commercial success and brings much needed revenue for the English Counties.

21. What are your thoughts on the sledging issue – I don't personally. I don't think it brings anything to the game, however if anybody sledges me, I feel quite entitled to have a go back!

22. Who do you rate as being the best in the last 20 years -
Batsman – Greg Chappell - the most stylish batsman ever!
Bowler – Pace - Malcolm Marshall - had everything for a quicky. Spinner - Shane Warne - there will never be another like him.
WK – Alan Knott - as a pure wicket-keeper and not an allrounder.
Allrounder – Ian Botham
Captain – Steve Waugh

23. Who do you rate as being the greatest cricketer of all time – Batsman - Bradman, Bowler - Lillee, Allrounder - Sobers

23b. That you have played with – Probably Mike Gatting who captained the Lord's Taveners

23c. That you have played against – Batsman - Gordon Greenidge Bowler - Joel Garner

23d. Was there any player you simply did not like - Not really, although I didn't like the fact that Viv Richards was so good and seemed to be so arrogant with it!

24. Have you ever had professional cricket coaching - Only very late in life. Probably too late!

25. What is the best tip you've had or given – 'Watch the ball right onto the bat.' You can't really go wrong with that one, no matter what else you may be doing.

26. Is there are song you love that you relate to cricket - 10CC- Dreadlock Holiday - It has the line,"I don't like cricket .... I loveit!"
27. Best Cricket Video you've seen – A compilation called '100 Greatest Wickets'

28. Best Cricket Book you've read – Mike Atherton's Autobiography - he wrote it himself with no ghost writer and it shows. Also Nasser Hussian's Playing with Fire - Brutally honest and open.

29. Best Cricket "After Dinner" speaker you've seen – A guy in England called Bob 'the Cat' Bevan.

30. Best / Nicest cricketer you've met - Greg Blewett - I met him at a Lashings game and spoke to him for about half an hour on bats, the Australian team, his career. He didn't know me from Adam, but seemed genuine in his interest about our conversation.

31. What other interests do you have outside of cricket – I like to read a lot and think up crazy fundraising ideas.

32. How did you come across Kingsgrove Sports Centre - Whilst cylcing across Australia on my Penny Farthing, I stopped off at Bowral to visit the Bradman Museum. I asked the manger there if he knew what the best cricket store in Sydney was and he told me Kingsgrove. The day after I finished my ride, I jumped in a cab and headed straight down to the Head Office!

33. Your Final say - I am probably in a very small minority as a Pom, but I don't go in for taking cheap shots at the Aussies! I think that having been the best cricket side in the world for well over a decade, they deserve my admiration and respect for what they have achieved and for taking cricket to another level. They have proved to be the benchmark for all other teams to aspire to and for that I think they should be justly praised and appreciated.
