Amazing First Class Debut for Kingsports' Trent Copeland
As reported in earlier news pieces here on the Kingsgrove Sports Website, Trent Copeland, is sponsored by Kingsport and has been enjoying plenty of success. We are proud to announce that Trent has amazed cricket followers with one of the most amazing debut performances in not only NSW history, but first class history as a whole.
Playing against Queensland at the SCG in the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield fixture, Copeland shocked all and sundry when he managed to bring home the amazing figues of 8-92 off 28.4 overs. Copeland then managed to claim the first 2 wickets in the QLD 2nd Innings to complete a match 10 wicket haul in what can only be decribed as a memorable First Class debut. Despite Copelands heroics NSW were let down by some dissapointing batting to lose the match.
Copeland, originally from the country NSW town of Bathurst has an amazing story to tell of his meteoric rise to first class fame.
After moving to Sydney to play for the famous St George Club, he spent his first few seasons as a keeper batsman in the middle grades until he decided he wanted to give bowling a go. The lanky youngster, 19 at the time, managed to talk his captain into having a bowl and after a slow start managed to claim the impressive figures of 4-1 to help his team win a close one.
The next few rounds produced a few wickets here and there before a 2nd innings haul of 8-26 out of 9 wickets signified his arrival as a bowler of true worth. He managed to help his team to a premiership with finals figures of 7-54 and 7-42. During the finals series he also managed scores of 104 and 75. So amazing figures are nothing new to Copeland.
The following season he was elevated straight into First Grade at St George where after 2 and a half seasons he has amassed an unbelievable 150. Figures that could no longer be ignored by State Selectors.
Even more incredible is his premiership cap collection. In the strong Sydney Grade competition where some stalwarts have never experience premiership success, Copeland has been involved in an amazing 6 premierships in just 6 full seasons including back to back First Grade premierships in the last 2 seasons.
After his dream debut Copeland was quoted as saying "You might not really believe me, but until four or five years ago I was a batsman in grade cricket and a wicketkeeper," he replied to media when asked who his favourite mentor was growing up.
"I’ve loved Damien Martyn when I grew up and loved how easily he hit the ball."
"Bowling-wise, I suppose I aspire to be like someone like Glenn McGrath, or Stuey Clark. Guys who bowl consistent line and lengths and do a bit with the ball off the wicket. Any bowler that plays for NSW I’m happy to aspire to.”
Copeland now finds himself in the NSW Limited Overs team to play on Wednesday the 3rd of February.
Managing Director of Kingsgrove Sports Centre, Harry Solomons has been sponsoring Trent with his Kingsport branded equipment for over a season now and was overwhelmingly proud that Trent was able to take the new Kingsport brand to first class level. "We only hope that Trent can go all the way soon, but by then I'm sure he'll have the big brands nipping at his heels", said Solomons. "But that is fine, Kingsport is all about the Journey, not just the destination". "Young cricketers like Trent deserve assistance on their way to bigger and better things".
We look forward to following Trent's future performances where hopefully his Trusty Kingsport Zone will harvest him some runs as well.
